Programme Description

This course introduces students to the idea of creativity, the emergence and nature of creative industries, and the ways creativity is commercialized, marketed, branded, and financed. Students will also learn how to start a business in the creative industries and how to make a business successful.In the second part of the course, students will have a chance to choose from two streams 'Get familiar with Branding' (Stream A) or the 'ACG (Animation, Comics and Games) economies' (Stream B) in East Asia including Japan, South Korea, and Greater China. Students will also have a chance to visit the key cultural and creative industries sites in Hong Kong and interact with local creators and entrepreneurs.

Learning Outcomes

After taking this course,

  • Students will gain a thorough understanding of the idea of creativity;
  • Students will be familiar with the history and concepts of creative industries;
  • Students will learn how to develop their creativity;
  • Students will know how to commercialize, market, brand, and finance creative projects;
  • Students will have a better understanding of the KOL, E-Sport, and fashion industries, and luxury markets in East Asia including Japan, Korea, and Greater China.

Assessment

Coursework (100%)

 
  • Class presentations (30%)

You will be divided into groups, and each group is required to conduct a presentation on the assigned readings in the class.

  • Group Project (70%)

You will be asked to form creative teams to develop a business in the creative industries. You are expected to conduct research, develop your proposal and the business content, and deliver a final presentation.

  • Currently studying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • Meets the undergraduate admission requirements of HKU (or other recognised universities) by possessing adequate secondary school or sub-degree qualifications.

  • Students of non-credit bearing programmes will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the programme. Students of credit-bearing programmes can apply for a transcript stating HKU credits. Please contact your home institution regarding the recognition of HKU credits.
  • It is understood that you must be available for the entire duration of the programme, from the start to the end. A 20% absence allowance is permitted for emergencies or sick leave, provided there is a legitimate reason and official letterhead proof for the absence. Students are responsible for contacting the programme coordinator and/or the relevant teacher in advance regarding any anticipated absence. No exceptions will be made unless prior approval has been granted. Punctuality is expected for all classes and tutorials. Unexcused lateness may be considered as an absence. Students who fail to achieve an 80% attendance rate or who are absent without legitimate reason and official letterhead proof will not be awarded HKU Credits or the Certificate of Attendance.
